A very old tradition that became a new ritual for celebrity loving Lugner...
The Vienna Opera Ball (Wiener Opernball in German) is one of the highlights of the Viennese carnival season.
Every year the auditorium of the Vienna State Opera is turned into a large ballroom. On the eve of the event, the rows of seats are removed from the stalls, and a new floor, level with the stage, is built.
The ball was first held 1935, but was suspended during World War II.
Lugner's tradition doesn't date as far back; the businessman started the tradition of taking a celebrity date (who is paid a fee) in 1991.
Inviting celebrities to his mall, Lugner City, helped make Richard's name and fortune and ushered Austria into a more celebrity-driven era, so he's a fan of the personal appearance... and this event is its apogee.
In 2010, Lindsay Lohan became the only celebrity who failed to show.
He's been accompanied so far by: Gina Lollobrigida, Harry Belafonte, Joan Collins, Ivana Trump, Sophia Loren, Grace Jones, Sarah, Duchess of York, Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway
Jacqueline Bisset and Nadja Abdel Farrag, Farrah Fawcett, Claudia Cardinale, Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock, Andie MacDowell, Geri Halliwell, Carmen Electra, Paris Hilton
Dita von Teese, Nicollette Sheridan, Dieter Bohlen (originally meant to be Lindsay Lohan, Larry Hagman, Karima El Mahroug aka Ruby the Heart Stealer and Zachi Noy, Brigitte Nielsen, Roger Moore and Mira Sorvino.

Lollobrigida has accompanied Lugner twice, in 1991 and 2013.
Mother Kris looked ecstatic to be a part of all the hoopla. She smiled from ear-to-ear in a black suit with a low-cut top that displayed her cleavage.
At one point she stood near her daughter as she gave a short speech.
Standing off to the side and holding a bouquet of flowers, Jenner almost looked like a bridesmaid to the white-clad Kim who was standing close to the tycoon.
Celebrities who have attended the opera with Lugner in the past have reportedly been paid for their appearances.
Leaving so soon? Kim looks sombre as she makes her exit with momager Kris and their entourage
Numbers as low as $150,000 and as high as $500,000 have been whispered about.
There has also been reports that the women get to borrow expensive jewelry for the Ball.
Lindsay Lohan was memorably a no show at the event in 2010 after promising to appear.
In 2011 Lugner made a misstep when he paid Karima El-Mahroug €40,000 (£34,000) to be his escort.

Unbeknownst to Lugner, Karima was also known as 'Ruby The Heart Stealer,' and was one of Silvio Berlusconi's infamous 'bunga bunga' girls.
In February 2011, Berlusconi was charged with paying for sex with Mahroug between February and May 2010 when she was under 18.
He was also charged with abusing his political powers in an attempt to cover up the relationship.
On 24 June 2013, Berlusconi was found guilty of paying El Mahroug for sex when she was 17 years old, and of abusing his powers in an ensuing cover up.
