Zanetti has been at Inter Milan for the past two decades, but his current deal expires at the end of the season.
He is understood to be interested in remaining in Italy but Mourinho could pounce if the veteran is unable to secure a new deal with the Serie A giants.
Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic looks set to sign for Inter at the end of the season after the Italian club's president claimed the deal is '90 per cent' done.
