Icons: The Kardashians invited famed fashion
photographer David LaChapelle to create their annual Christmas card. The
troubled shoot was featured on Keeping Up With the Kardashians: A Very
Merry Christmas, which aired Sunday.
Creating the a cinematic Christmas card was the highlight of Sunday’s special episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians: A Very Merry Christmas; and at first the family was thrilled with the unusual idea.
The temperamental artist, however, clashed quite a few times with the famous clan; first when he asked that only the females of the family be included - angering patriarch Bruce Jenner.
Although LaChapelle easily relented about including Bruce, he was highly distraught about having children on the set.
When Kim first brought up LaChapelle's name, Khloe objected.
‘We’ve been doing our Christmas cards for as long as I can remember,’ said Khloe as the girls looked at old ones.
‘This is something that we’ve never broken. We’ve never missed a year.’
Christmas past: The Kardashian Christmas cards always had a theme
All inclusive: Last year's card also include Kardashian husbands Lamar Odom and Scott Disick
‘David LaChapelle is someone I’ve always wanted to work with. It’s like you’ve stepped into a movie,’ she said of his work.
‘I’m sure he’ll have amazing ideas,’ said Kris who said it was ‘huge’ that he was taking the pictures.
‘He has his photos in museums and galleries all over the world.’
LaChapelle was seen arriving at Kris’ house to meet the clan, with an assistant.
‘You guys smell so good!’ Khloe told them, causing him to look strangely at her.
‘My only concern is that I have seen a lot of his work [where] most people are nude,’ Khloe added.
‘I hope that this is a PG version.’
A vision: Photographer David LaChapelle was invited to create the family's card this year and came with several ideas
The photographer vowed that this year’s would be ‘different’.
‘It will definitely be something really unexpected. On a deeper level [it] will say something about the time and place where we live,’ LaChapelle said at the meeting.
‘I am not this artsy fartsy brain,’ said Khloe.‘I really don’t know what he’s talking about.’
He revealed his ideas for an ‘action film set’ card. ‘It’s nuts,’ he said.
‘What about my kids?’ asked Kourtney, concerned.
The famed photographer admitted it would get ‘more complicated’ with children on set.
‘It’s going to add a level of stress and I won’t be able to focus,’ he said. ‘Maybe it’s better to leave the kids out.’
No boys allowed: Both Rob Kardashian and
Kourtney's husband, Scott Disick were told because Lamar Odom and Kayne
West wouldn't be there for the shoot, they couldn't be either
‘I really think my kids should be part of it,’ Kourtney insisted.
‘I know he is an artist but it’s still our family Christmas card. They will be in it,’ she said later.
Kim liked his idea of just having the girls of the family in the shoot, as did Kris.
‘Kanye is on tour, Lamar is, erm, busy,’ said Kim, as Khloe looked disapprovingly at her.
Rob didn’t want to be in the card so the girls asked Scott how he felt about being left out. He too was OK with not being a part of it.
Also not wanted: While Lamar and Khloe have
separated, Bruce Jenner was highly irritated at the suggestion he be
left off the card
But Kendall and Kylie wanted dad Bruce to be in it.
‘I think that is a terrible decision,’ he said when he heard about the girls-only plan.
‘It’s our family Christmas card. We’ve done it for 23 years.’
‘I didn’t realize he felt this way,’ said Kris. ‘There’s so much drama going on in our family right now.’
Refusing to be tossed: Bruce was adamant that he
be included in the Christmas shoot, despite the fact he has moved out
of the house and is separated from Kris
She agreed to sit down with Bruce to explain her feelings at a country club.
‘I’ve never in the past had to be invited to our Christmas card,’ Bruce told her.
‘It wasn’t a dis on you or anyone else,’ Kris told him.
‘I’m in,’ he said as she warned him it was a ‘crazy theme’.
At a clothes fitting two days before the shoot, stylist Johnny Wujek found outfits for the family.
Dressing up: LaChapelle chose different outfits for each Kardashian member
‘The clothes are, like, outrageous,’ said Kim as LaChapelle came to check up on progress.
‘This is exactly what I wanted,’ he said as Kim squeezed her breasts into a tiny dress.
But he wasn’t sure about her blonde hair.
‘Can we spray it black for the shoot?’ he asked her.
‘I’m going to stick this one through,’ she said, saying she was going to get a spray tan the night before, as he looked horrified.
Bruce also turned up - and kept a watchful eye as the team styled his daughter.
‘She’s still 17, guys,’ he warned them.
‘Only for three days, dad,’ she said.
Vavoom: Kim stood out with her cleavage and big hair
Kourtney was sick so didn’t make the session, as Kim brought up the subject of kids.
‘I don’t know anything about kids,’ said LaChapelle as she said they would come at the end.
‘Nobody told me. There’s fire. We talked about this at the meeting. There can’t be kids running around, seriously. There’s glass. In the group photo?’ he said. ‘That’s not going to work.’
The set was kept a secret as the girls got their hair and make up done.
‘I’m going to have the kids come in at the end,’ said Kourtney, saying she would remove anything dangerous, as LaChapelle told Kris he wanted her to have a huge slit on her dress.
The girls got glammed up with big hair in a 1960s style.
‘Do you see how big my hair is right now?’ Khloe complained - as she struggled to move in her tight fitting dress.
Rip! Khloe's dress was so tight, it split down the back when she tried to lay down
Bruce appeared in a tux
‘Kim’s hair is like, you’re giving me nothing!’ LaChapelle told one of his team.
‘I want a [bleeping] sex machine!’ This is so normal,’ he told her.
‘He is really unhappy with my hair. I just have to trust his vision,’ Kim said. ‘You’ve got to do something major,’ he told the hairdresser. ‘You’ve got to really [bleeping] go. It needs an edge.’
Kim emerged looking like Barbarella with her breasts popping out of her dress.
‘I mean, Gorge-rella!’ said a wowed Khloe.
‘Your hair is bigger than your ass,’ Bruce told Kim.
The set: Kim looked old Hollywood glam
Got his way: Former Olympian Bruce had a spot in the set as an ode to his athletic prowess
Kris wore an elaborate headdress as the set was unveiled for the first time.
‘Oh my God,’ said Kris as she took in the multi-themed set that featured Bruce as an Olympian, walls of TVs, tabloids on the ground, a giant mural of a black woman suckling a baby, bins on fire and a neon sign featuring the words ‘The End’.
‘[He] has created a post apocalyptic, futuristic world. It’s very pop culture. I am just blown away,’ said Kris.
LaChapelle told them where to stand - but Khloe said she couldn’t lounge in her tight dress. As she tried to lie down her dress ripped, with added sound effects.
My way or the highway: Kourtney insisted her two
children be included in the shoot, despite broken glass and fire on the
set. The photographer relented
‘I’m so happy to see my children,’ said Kourtney as Mason made an appearance on set.
‘Look straight at me,’ LaChapelle told her as Mason was heard in the background saying, ‘Mommy, I don’t like your hair.’
‘Oh God, there’s children,’ LaChapelle said to his team as Mason ran about.
‘I’m not putting the kids anywhere. They’re toddlers, they’re babies. I don’t have a place to put them,’ he told an assistant.
‘I didn’t plan on the kids being in the shot. I didn’t baby proof the set. I’m really scared of toddlers being here,’ he told Kourtney.
‘It’s a Christmas card. I think we want them in the shoot,’ she said.
‘I get that. [But] I’m a safety freak,’ he said. ‘There’s glass. I’m just not comfortable.’
There ya go: Mama wouldn't let her kids not be included and was happy when they showed up
‘They’re not going to start running around,’ she told him.
‘I don’t want to, like, ruin the Christmas card. I don’t want to be the Grinch who stole Christmas,’ he added.
‘You are. I’m just kidding,’ she said.
‘You guys are really used to getting your own way, aren’t you?’ he said.
But his heart seemed to melt a little when he saw Mason in his mini tux, who lay down with his aunt Khloe, while Kourtney held baby Penelope.
Bruce was trapped inside a tube while the others posed for the camera as Kris wore her Cleopatra-style crown. Penelope began crying at one point.
‘I cannot wait to see the finished photo,’ said Kris.
‘The Grinch’s heart grows two sizes at the end,’ Kourtney told LaChapelle at the end of the shoot.
Pulled it off: The shoot was considered a great success
We all know families who insist on doing
Christmas cards with a portrait of themselves in some kind of festive
scenario. Sometimes it's sweet, sometimes it's just embarrassing. Which
category to the Kardashian / Jenner clan fit into do you think?
We're not sure but it's definitely an alternative depiction of Christmas. There aren't many families that would have David LaChapelle as the photographer of their yearly round robin for a start, let alone the extreme designer clothing involved and bizarre backdrop. But this is the Kardashians kids so what else could we expect?
Kim's dress is particularly special. This Saint Laurent sequin bolero gown, previously seen on Carmen Electra, is to die for and we only wish we had an occasion to wear it. If you do, and you have a sizeable budget to spend then click through to Luisa Via Roma where you can buy Kim's dress now. We love the embellished sleeves, cut out panels and deep plunging neckline.
Of course, Saint Laurent is a little out of most people's league (ours for sure) so let's look to the high street where there are some similar looks to choose from. Go for cut outs at John Lewis or embellishment at Lipsy and Forever Unique and then wear with some chic black heels and cascading glossy locks like our Kim.The 90-minute episode began with the clan opening a few gifts and talking about Christmases past.

‘We’re so excited to share these memories with you,’ added Kim.
Viewers got to see footage of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and brother Rob having fun in 1986, when the sisters all got bikes and Khloe got a toy ironing board.
‘I barely slept,’ mum Kris said as she recalled the excitement.
‘The more kids I had, the more exciting it got and it was just magical.’
With their bio dad: Khloe, Kim, Kourtney and Rob were shown in an old photo with their now deceased father, Robert Kardashian
Then fans got a glimpse of Kris and Bruce Jenner’s youngest daughters, Kendall and Kylie, as they enjoyed their Xmas in 2002 when they were seven- and five-years-old.
Neither of the teenagers looked especially impressed that their childhood selves were being broadcast to millions of viewers.
‘They had so much personality back then,’ dad Bruce said wistfully. A few photos include Robert Kardashian, the girls' late father and famous attorney.
Khloe had a photo of Bruce, Lamar and Santa and one of Kourtney after her split from Scott ‘about 15 pounds underweight and looking to impress’.
More old Christmas photos: Bruce tickles daughter Kylie's chin
Shoulder pads: The kids made fun of Kris Jenner's nifty Christmas outfit from 1986
‘And trying to hook up with Santa and get him drunk,’ joked Kourtney.
Kourtney showed off a snapshot of her mum looking very geeky in the 1970s with her stepfather Harry - and another man whose face was blanked out.
‘You slept with him?!’ the family cried incredulously.
‘I still believe in Santa,’ said Kourtney as more home videos were seen - including one of an ‘inappropriate’ Santa who was flirting with Kris.
‘We’ve been so fashionable over the years,’ said Kris as she showed off a montage of the old outfits the family had worn over the decades, from 1986 onwards.
‘Oh my God,’ said Scott as he saw Kourtney’s hair in 1990. ‘[She] looks like a portobello mushroom. I cannot watch that. Why would you do that to your kid?’
'She looks like a portobello mushroom1' Scott did not like his wife's previous look
‘Look at how cute you were back then,’ said Bruce.
‘You were such a great dad to these girls,’ said Kris.
‘He was such a great dad to ALL of us,’ added Rob, of his stepfather.
‘I worked hard at it,’ Bruce said.
Earlier Scott, who is Jewish, announced ‘Happy Hanukkah’ to the room as he came in.
‘My nose is better,’ said Bruce as he showed off scars on his nose.He underwent surgery for skin cancer earlier this year, according to reports.
Bruce's nose is on the mend: Bruce's stitches on his nose didn't stop him from chuckling with daughters Kylie and Kendall
The family were also seen planning their Christmas celebrations after a turbulent year.
‘You never say the word tabloid as long as you live!’ warned Kris when Bruce mentioned the mags.
‘Because my mum and Bruce are now separated we just need to figure out what Christmas will be like,’ said Kourtney.
‘We’re still family,’ said Bruce. ‘The relationship has changed. It doesn’t make any difference.’
‘Bruce is still our dad,’ said Khloe.
The episode ended with the sisters decorating their tree - before the 2013 card was unveiled in all its glory.
In a preview for the next episode they showed work progressing on Kanye’s home recording studio, and Khloe talking about her life post-Lamar. Up With The Kardashians Christmas special.
Thrilling finale: At the end of the 90-minute episode, all the Kardashian girls were happy once again
